Music has been used to celebrate Christmas for hundreds of years as Christmas carols, or a classical sound through to the more modern day music made popular in the charts of recent times. Carols were first heard in English in 1426, and other than being prohibited under Cromwell’s government in the middle of the 17th century have been a long established way of celebrating the Christmas season.
Somewhat surprisingly, with only a few exceptions, all of todays carols do not date back further than the 19th century, and most have a history and story surrounding them, although this is not always conclusive.
More modern day Christmas songs are based on the Christmas traditions of Santa Claus bringing presents on his sleigh, pulled by reindeer, and delivering them down the chimney in his red coat, whilst the ground is covered in snow! The oldest of these are ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’ with the films bringing us ‘White Christmas’ (from Holiday Inn) and ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ (from Meet Me In St. Louis). Songs from the latter part of the 20th century, during which the race to be Christmas number one was keenly contested, include ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’, ‘Last Christmas’ and ‘Fairytale of New York’ but interestingly, these three only made it to number two in the UK.
Many of these tunes are used in ornaments and novelty items that play a Christmas song when they are activated, and there is a page dedicated to them on Christmas-Music.co.uk. You can also find a good selection of Christmas films that can be enjoyed throughout the year, but are traditionally viewed over Christmas. Finally, the Christmas music is divided up with pages dedicated to Christmas carols, Christmas albums including compilation CDs, and classical Christmas tunes.
